Mageia 2 Beta 3, Return of the Live CD

mageiaMageia 2 Beta 3 was announced yesterday and with it came its final design and the return of the live media. After about a half dozen developmental versions, the Mageia team is finally in the homestretch of this their second major release. All their hard work is really starting to pay off, but they’re not finished just yet.

The release candidate is scheduled for May 2, so Anne Nicolas once again reminded users to report those bugs, especially with the live media. The errata list is continuing to grow, so be sure to check that before filing bugs. Many issues have workarounds. For example, those using NVIDIA graphic chips may have to apply the boot cheat code xdriver=nouveau to boot the shiny new live CDs. Fortunately for me, I wasn’t one of them.

One interesting little bug is the hang during first boot. It seems after installing Mageia, during first boot the system might appear to hang. "If you press ESC during the boot process, you might see that it hangs at the message: "Starting cpufreq (via systemctl)"." Then, as if anyone would, wait 10 minutes. The boot process should continue from there and work correctly in subsequent boots.

Nicolas said the "final design is nearly all integrated" and the new default background looks great. The theme is modest, but some effects are on and working by default. I have to say, it’s an improvement over version 1.

The live CD boots a bit slow, but it gets there and, otherwise, seems to work fine. The localization customizations are still there. KDE 4.8.2 seems more responsive and, one hopes, more stable. The live CD features the old-fashioned Classic hierarchical menu, I suppose to save space. By that same principal, there are only a few applications bundled by default – but that does include LibreOffice and Firefox.

It’s looking good and the live media is working again. I’m starting to get excited. Final is due May 15. Test drive the beta here.
