Countdown to Mandriva 2011, Codename Announced

mandrivaIn counting down the release to Mandriva 2011 Viacheslav "multik" Kaloshin, from ROSA Labs, has been blogging about a new significant changes in the works. So far they’ve been a bit ho-hum, but today he announced the 2011 official codename.

"Some times ago, we asked in cooker and engineering mailing list about new codename for Mandriva 2011. This topic generated lots of emails, where suggestions were from star names to animals," was said of the process. After a bit of discussion they narrowed the suggestions down to the Periodic Table of Elements. So, today the official codename for Mandriva 2011 is "Hydrogen."

Hydrogen is the most well known chemical element.  It sits at the first position on the table with its atomic number 1 because it is the lightest (and most abundant) of the elements. Hydrogen is a gas in its natural state and is highly combustible. One wonders if Helium will be Mandriva’s next choice.

Yesterday was the "total freeze" of the Mandriva repository. That means that all features, software, kernel, and versions are set. Nothing left now but last minute critical show-stopping bug fixes and rolling the ISOs.

On August 17 Kaloshin posted with the news that Guilherme Moro, Alexander Kurtakov and David Walluck are just about finished with the huge task of updating the 1000-package Java stack for the upcoming release. He says the end result will be a "better cross-distro stack."

Mandriva 2011 is scheduled for release on August 29.
